DNA bill finds growing support
Wisconsin
A bill to have DNA taken from accused felony offenders upon arrest instead of conviction is gaining momentum in the Assembly but has not received the endorsement of the state's top law enforcement official.
 
The wrongful conviction of Mr. Gates in the 1981 rape and murder of a D.C. woman and that of James Bain in the 1974 assault of a 9-year-old boy could serve as primers for what's wrong with the system.
 
Chemist admits to falsifying lab report
New York
A former chemist with Erie County's crime laboratory admitted she failed to conduct the proper forensic tests in a local drug case.
South Dakota
A Sturgis woman had a blood-alcohol level of .708 percent, possibly a state record, when she was found earlier this month behind the wheel of a stolen vehicle parked on Interstate 90, according to Meade County State’s Attorney Jesse Sondreal.
 
Last year the European Court of Human Rights ruled that the DNA records of people who had not been charged or convicted cannot be held indefinitely.
